Speaking from the Roosevelt Room on Friday, President Obama announced he is nominating former Pentagon official Ashton Carter as the next secretary of defense. Carter was deputy defense secretary from 2011 to 2013. If confirmed by the Senate, he will become the fourth Pentagon chief in the Obama administration. His nomination came less than two weeks after current Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced his resignation.
