Suspicious packages were sent to the offices of both Alaska senators as well as state’s congressman on Monday; at least two of the packages contained white powder. The packages were received at the Fairbanks offices of Sens. Mark Begich and Lisa Murkowski and the Anchorage office of Rep. Don Young. The packages had an Arizona return address. A spokeswoman for Begich said a staff member opened the box in a plastic bag, according to office procedure, and white powder spilled out of the package. Officials said they were still testing the material.
