California gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman hit back hard on Thursday on charges that she knowingly employed an illegal immigrant for nine years and only fired her once she decided to run for governor. Whitman laid blame for the charge at the feet of her opponent Jerry Brown, saying he should be “ashamed of what his allies are trying to do to her.” The housekeeper, Nicky Diaz Santillan, and her attorney Gloria Allred says Whitman was sent several letters from the Social Security Administration, saying that Santillan’s social-security number did not match her name. Whitman said she never saw the letters, and alleged on Thursday that Santillan stole the letters and prevented them from coming to her attention.
