WikiLeaks’ dump of diplomatic cables contained a list of sites abroad that the U.S. considers vital to its national interest—a list that, critics contend, will help terrorists plot attacks. Still, it’s a fascinating look into the range of America’s overseas interests: Locations include a Cobalt mine in Congo, a Danish insulin plant, and the manufacturer of anti-snake venom in Australia. The document was written in 2009 when the State Department asked diplomats to identify locations where “the incapacitation or destruction of such systems and assets would have a debilitating impact on security, national economic security, national public health or safety, or any combination of those matters.”
