According to WikiLeaks, the unnamed country targeted by the NSA in recent Washington Post and Intercept reports is Afghanistan. Those two publications (The Intercept is run by Glenn Greenwald) had refrained from naming the country per a U.S. government request. According to WikiLeaks, the NSA records and stores almost all domestic and international phone calls in Afghanistan, a practice the agency says is an important part of the drone targeting program. In naming Afghanistan as the NSA target, WikiLeaks claimed, “Such censorship strips a nation of its right to self-determination on a matter which affects its whole population. An ongoing crime of mass espionage is being committed against the victim state and its population.” In a direct shot at Greenwald, WikiLeaks declared, “We do not believe it is the place of media to ‘aid and abet’ a state in escaping detection and prosecution for a serious crime against a population.”
