The wildfire that has been raging through northern New Mexico is getting worse: it’s already destroyed 92,735 acres of land since it started on Sunday, and responders have so far contained only 3 percent of the fire. Officials say the blaze has now entered a canyon that leads to Los Alamos, a small city in the north-central part of the state. Though residents have evacuated that town and the Los Alamos National Laboratory, about 10,000 experiments had to be put on hold as a result of the evacuation. Additionally, the lab stores thousands of drums that contain low-grade nuclear waste, and they are located only about two miles from the fire. But lab officials say the fire will probably not reach the containers and that they should be able to withstand the flames.
