Before he died in 2006, William Styron—author of Sophie’s Choice, and a winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award—couldn’t finish what he started. He began several short stories about his time in the Marine Corps, but abandoned them due to bouts of depression. But now five of those stories—two of which have never been published—will see the light, in The Suicide Run, a collection of Styron’s stories due out in October. One of the unpublished stories, entitled Rat Beach, about enrolling in the Marine Corps at age 17, was published in this week’s New Yorker.
