Belgian artist Wim Delvoye debuts his latest work, Torre—a steel tower with ogival windows, tracery and turrets, that faces the Grand Canal on the terrace of Palazzo Venier deei Leoni. The Surrealist tower is built in the International Gothic style and represents the triumph of ornamentation over practicality and utility. Torre is influenced by architectural masterpieces such as Notre Dame and the Cathedral of Saint John the Divine in New York, but also draws inspiration from Romantic paintings of Caspar David Friedrich and Karl Friedrich Schninkel. The work is presented by the Peggy Guggenheim foundation until November 22.
