The World Press Photo contest organizers have revoked the prize awarded to Italian photographer Giovanni Troilo, who judges said misrepresented the location of an image in his 10-photo series The Dark Heart of Europe. The photo in question showed Troilo’s cousin having sex with a woman in the back seat of a car. Critics argue that the photo was staged because Troilo used a remote-control flash. “The World Press Photo Contest must be based on trust in the photographers who enter their work and in their professional ethics,” said Lars Boering, World Press Photo managing director. “We now have a clear case of misleading information and this changes the way the story is perceived. A rule has now been broken, and a line has been crossed.”
