Scottish-born journalist Alexander Cockburn succumbed to cancer in Germany on Saturday, his family said. The 71-year-old journalist and author was “a punishing writer” in the words of former Village Voice colleague Wayne Barrett—an unapologetic leftist who also wrote for The Nation, The New Statesman, The Wall Street Journal, and many other publications. Cockburn’s caustic views on everything from the state of Israel to what he saw as the fecklessness of the American left earned him the ire and respect of friends and foes alike.
