First NYU opens an Abu Dhabi campus, now this. Yale University will launch a liberal arts college in Singapore, exporting the university’s curriculum that focuses on critical thinking and the humanities as well as its method of teaching. Grads would not get a Yale degree, but one from the National University of Singapore, a prestigious school in Asia, and the college will be called Yale-NUS College. Yale will be in charge of hiring the 100 professors to teach the college’s 1,000 students when doors open in 2013. Liberal arts programs are rare in Asia, and Yale hopes to attract the best students from the area and bring others to its New Haven campus. The college will be financed by the Singapore government, which is controversial to many who cite its quashing of free speech.
