A massive antigovernment protest in Yemen’s capital, which drew more than 100,000 people, turned deadly on Sunday when state security forces opened fire, killing at least 26, according to medical officials who spoke to the Associated Press. As many as 200 were injured. While the Gulf nation has been rallying against the rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh for months, this was the first time the government struck back in weeks. Saleh himself was injured in an assault on his compound three months ago, and has still not returned to his country after seeking medical care in Saudi Arabia.
